Key Characteristics

Mythological Origin: Traditionally, the text is said to have been revealed by the Sun God (Surya) to Maya Asura in the city of Romaka at the end of the Satya Yuga.
Scientific Content: It includes sophisticated mathematical concepts, such as the roots of trigonometry (specifically sine and cosine functions) and early descriptions of gravity.
Cosmology & Time: The text uses a geocentric model and defines massive time cycles called Yugas (or Mahayugas) to calculate the long-term orbits of planets.
Legacy & Influence: It was highly also influential in medieval Islamic geography and was one of the first Indian astronomical texts translated into Arabic and later into English by scholars like Ebenezer Burgess.

Notable Observations and Calculations

Tropical Year: Estimated at 365.2421756 days, which is remarkably close to modern scientific measurements.
Sine Tables: One of the world's earliest tables for the sine function, calculated for every 3.75 degree of arc.
Planetary Motion: The motion of planets providing orbital parameters based on the number of revolutions per Mahayuga.
Spherical Earth: Describes Earth as a sphere (Bhu-gol) and discusses gravity before European theories.

Chapter 01 Mean Motions

To the Form unseen, beyond decree,
To the source of traits, yet traitless free,
To Brahman, base of worlds that be,
I bow with reverent harmony. [1.1]

When Krita waned in twilight sea,
Mayasur sought the mystery,
The purest lore, the highest key,
To know the truth eternally. [1.2]

The foremost limb of Veda’s plea,
The cause of motion, astrology,
He worshipped Surya fervently,
With penance hard, austerity. [1.3]

By penance vast the Sun did see,
The seeker’s heart in purity,
He gave the course of planets free,
Bestowed their paths eternally. [1.4]

Thy heart is known, appeased by me,
Through penance deep and constancy,
I grant the lore of time’s decree,
The planets’ course, their majesty. [1.5]

None bears my blaze eternally,
Nor time permits my clarity,
Yet part of me, this man shall be,
And tell thee all in verity. [1.6]

Thus spoke the Deva, vanished free,
Commanding forth his energy,
That man approached with folded plea,
Mayasur bowed devotedly. [1.7]

Attend with mind in unity,
The lore declared in purity,
By Surya’s voice through every spree,
To sages vast in history. [1.8]

This primal text the Sun did weave,
As ages turn, distinctions leave,
The change of time alone conceive,
No other shift the lore shall grieve. [1.9]

Time ends the worlds, their destiny,
Another counts their measure free,
Twofold he stands in subtlety,
Embodied yet immaterially. [1.10]

Breath marks the gross reality,
A moment small the subtle key,
Six breaths define a vinadi,
By sixty counts a nadika be. [1.11]
