Lord Ganesh & The Mouse (Mushika)

Lord Ganesh, the elephant-headed deity of beginnings, rides a tiny Mouse. This striking contrast is a profound metaphor for the intellect (Buddhi) controlling the desire-driven mind. The mouse, known for its ability to gnaw through everything and its restless nature, represents our wandering desires. By sitting upon it, Ganesh shows that a true leader is one who has conquered their own inner restlessness.

The Mighty Lord of path and gate,
Who humbles pride and conquers fate;
Upon a tiny steed he rides,
Where secret thought and shadow hides.

The restless mouse that gnaws the grain,
Is led by wisdom’s steady rein;
No wall too thick, no crack too small,
The Master’s grace pervades them all.

The mouse can slip through narrow ways,
Lost within the worldly maze;
It represents the senses' greed,
That takes far more than what we need.

But Ganesh, with his heavy weight,
Has stilled the mouse’s frantic state;
He shows that even smallest things,
Can carry what the Spirit brings.

The ego is a hungry thief,
That brings the heart a hidden grief;
Like a rodent in the dark of night,
It shuns the glow of holy light.

Yet when the Lord assumes the seat,
The transformation is complete;
The thief becomes a faithful friend,
On whom the Master can depend.

With large ears open to the prayer,
He breathes the transcendental air;
The mouse beneath him learns to wait,
At peace within the temple gate.

One tusk is broken, one is whole,
To show the balance of the soul;
And as he moves across the floor,
The mouse unlocks the secret door.

It nibbles through the ropes of doubt,
And puts the inner foes to rout;
The obstacles that block the way,
Like morning mist, they melt away.

Though he is vast as mountain peaks,
It is the humble heart he seeks;
The mouse proves that the soul is light,
When guided by the Giver’s might.

From every burden, every care,
He offers us a strength to share;
By taming what is wild and small,
He brings a blessing to us all.

The intellect must be the king,
To govern every earthly thing;
Until the mind, so sharp and quick,
Is steady as a candle’s wick.

So bow to him who rides the grain,
To end the cycle of our pain;
With Ganesh as our constant guide,
The doors of truth are opened wide.
