Manushya / Family Pitri Tarpan

Take water mixed with black sesame in your right hand. For each departed relative (father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, etc.), recite their name and Gotra, and offer the water with the following mantra:

Mantra: "[Name of the Ancestor] Gotram [Gotra Name] Tropyatamidam Jalam Tasmai Svadha Namah, Tasmai Svadha Namah, Tasmai Svadha Namah."

[पितर का नाम] गोत्रम् [गोत्र का नाम] तृप्यतमिदं जलं तस्मै स्वधा नमः, तस्मै स्वधा नमः, तस्मै स्वधा नमः।

May this pure and cooling water feed,
Your Atma, dear [Name] of [Gotra] seed;
To ancestors we bow and pray,
May peace be yours this sacred day.

Comprehending

The sacred fortnight opens up the gate,
Where living mortals contemplate their fate;
It is a time of memory and prayer,
When ancestors are held with tender care.

We pause our busy lives to look behind,
And leave all selfish grievances consigned;
The Pitra Paksha calls us to revere,
The Atmas of all the generations dear.

Through sacred rituals and humble rice,
We offer up a spiritual sacrifice;
The fortnight wraps the family in grace,
And puts devotion in its proper place.

It cleanses karma of the ancient line,
And turns human duty into something divine;
A period of reflection and of peace,
Where restless wanderings of spirits cease.

So let us enter into this fortnight deep,
And keep the promises our fathers keep;
For understanding Pitra Paksha brings,
A healing balm to all created things.

A fortnight dedicated to the dead,
Where holy prayers and mantras softly tread;
The sacred period shines with quiet light,
Illuminating every autumn night.

For fifteen days the mundane noise subsides,
As reverence in every household glides;
The focus shifts from future and from now,
To ancient roots to which our spirits bow.

It is a fortnight unlike any other,
Where every Atma is sister and is brother;
United in a common act of grace,
To bless the lineage of the human race.

The rituals are performed with steady hand,
Across the borders of our ancient land;
The sacred fortnight builds a bridge of love,
Connecting earthly homes with realms above.

When these fifteen holy days are run,
And fading daylight greets the setting sun,
The heart feels lighter and the Atma is free,
Restored in peace and spiritual harmony.
